Koen Vanmechelen (°1965, Sint-Truiden) is een internationaal gerenommeerde Belgische conceptueel kunstenaar, bekend om zijn interdisciplinaire werk dat kunst, wetenschap en maatschappelijke thema's verbindt. Centraal in zijn oeuvre staat het idee van bioculturele diversiteit en de interactie tussen natuur en cultuur.

Zijn bekendste project is het Cosmopolitan Chicken Project (CCP), waarin hij sinds eind jaren 1990 nationale kippenrassen kruist tot een 'kosmopolitische kip'. Deze levende kunstwerken symboliseren genetische diversiteit en culturele vermenging. Het project leidde tot samenwerkingen met wetenschappers en leverde hem onder andere een eredoctoraat op van de Universiteit Hasselt en de Golden Nica Hybrid Art van Prix Ars Electronica in 2013.

Vanmechelen is ook de oprichter van LABIOMISTA in Genk, een evoluerend kunstwerk en ontmoetingsplek op de voormalige site van de zoo van Zwartberg. Hier combineert hij kunst, wetenschap en maatschappelijke reflectie in een unieke omgeving.

His most notable project is the Cosmopolitan Chicken Project (CCP), initiated in the late 1990s, where he crossbreeds national chicken breeds to create a 'cosmopolitan chicken'. These living artworks symbolize genetic diversity and cultural mixing. The project has led to collaborations with scientists and earned him accolades such as an honorary doctorate from the University of Hasselt and the Golden Nica Hybrid Art award from Prix Ars Electronica in 2013.

Vanmechelen is also the founder of LABIOMISTA in Genk, an evolving artwork and meeting place situated on the former site of the Zwartberg zoo. Here, he combines art, science, and societal reflection in a unique environment.
