In zijn werk en leven onderzoekt Stief DeSmet de dubbelzinnige relatie tussen natuur en cultuur
en de manipulatie van de natuur door mensenhanden en vice versa. De kunstenaar lijkt
voortdurend gevangen te zitten tussen zijn werkelijke bestaan in een hectische, op consumptie
gebaseerde moderne samenleving en een verlangen naar een sublieme, utopische natuurlijke staat.
Tegelijkertijd is hij kritisch en bekijkt hij op subtiele wijze de relativiteit van dit verlangen naar een
idyllische fantasie met een serieuze dosis ironie. Door iconische beelden te manipuleren verzet hij
mogelijke betekenissen, voegt een betekenislaag toe of misleidt hij de toeschouwer.
Zijn atelierpraktijk is niet gericht op één medium, in plaats daarvan schakelt hij gemakkelijk tussen
schilderen en beeldhouwen, video, performance of installatiekunst.

Na enkele jaren in Gent en L.A. te hebben gewoond, trok hij zich terug in het vredige dorpje
Bachte-Maria-Leerne, een paar kilometer ten zuiden van Gent, nabij de idyllische rivier de Leie,
waar hij met zijn vrouw en twee kinderen, schapen, kippen en een hond in een voormalige
boerderij werkt en woont. Daar heeft hij verschillende ateliers met verschillende specificaties waar
je hem aan het werk kunt vinden, afhankelijk van de stemming van de dag. Daarnaast woont en
werkt hij in de voormalige dorpsschool van Minot in de franse Bourgogne.
Het werk van DeSmet is te vinden in privécollecties in België, Nederland, Frankrijk, de VS,
Zwitserland en in openbare ruimtes in België, Nederland en Frankrijk.

In his work and life Stief DeSmet is preoccupied by the ambiguous relationship between nature and
culture and the manipulation of nature by human hands and vice versa. The artist seems to be
constantly caught between his actual existence in a hectic, consumption-based modern day society
and a longing for a sublime, utopian natural state. At the same time he is critical and in a subtle way
he recognises the relativity of this longing for an idyllic fantasia with a serious dose of irony. By
manipulating iconic images he counters possible significations, adds a stratum of significance or
deludes the spectator.

His studio practice isn't focused on one medium, instead he switches easily between painting and
sculpting, video, performance and installation art.

After living in Ghent and L.A. for several years he retreated to the peaceful village of Bachte-Maria-
Leerne, a few kilometers south of Ghent near the idyllic Leie river, where he works and lives with
his wife and two children, sheep, chickens and a dog in a former farm. There he has several
studiospaces with different specifications where you can find him at work, depending the mood of
the day. He also lives and works in the former village school of Minot in Burgundy, Fr.
DeSmet's work is found in private collections in Belgium, The Netherlands, France, U.S.A.,
Switserland and in public spaces in Belgium,The Netherlands and France.
