Een bronzen capsule helt lichtjes uit evenwicht, terwijl erboven een wolkvorm lijkt te zweven. Met De Gedaanteverwisseling geeft Luk Van Soom vorm aan een gebeurtenis die normaal volledig aan ons zicht ontsnapt: het moment waarop een zaadcel een eicel bereikt en nieuw leven ontstaat.

Van Soom vertrekt vaak vanuit herkenbare vormen die hij transformeert tot beelden waarin werkelijkheid, verbeelding en symboliek samenvloeien. De capsulevorm onderaan roept tegelijk associaties op met een zaad, een cocon, een vaartuig of een drager van potentieel leven. Daarboven verschijnt de wolk, een motief dat regelmatig terugkeert in zijn oeuvre en verwijst naar het vluchtige, het ongrijpbare en het immateriële.

Wat dit werk bijzonder maakt, is de spanning tussen schaal en onderwerp. De aanleiding was een uiterst persoonlijk moment, de conceptie van zijn dochter, maar de sculptuur overstijgt het individuele verhaal. Van Soom vertaalt een microscopisch en onzichtbaar proces naar een monumentaal beeld in brons. Zo wordt De Gedaanteverwisseling niet alleen een werk over geboorte, maar ook over transformatie, potentie en het voortdurende mysterie van het ontstaan van leven.

Van Soom often starts from recognisable forms which he transforms into images where reality, imagination, and symbolism converge. The capsule-like structure below evokes a seed, a cocoon, a vessel, or a carrier of potential life. Above it floats the cloud, a recurring motif in his oeuvre that refers to the fleeting, the intangible, and the immaterial.

What makes this work particularly compelling is the tension between its subject and its scale. The inspiration was an intensely personal event, the conception of the artist’s daughter, yet the sculpture transcends autobiography. Van Soom translates a microscopic and invisible process into a monumental bronze form. In doing so, De Gedaanteverwisseling becomes not only a work about birth, but also about transformation, potential, and the enduring mystery of how life begins.
