Berlinde De Bruyckere is een Belgische beeldhouwster die internationaal bekendstaat om haar aangrijpende sculpturen en installaties. Haar werk onderzoekt thema's als lichamelijke kwetsbaarheid, lijden, transformatie en de grens tussen mens en dier. Ze maakt gebruik van materialen zoals was, hout, textiel, dierlijke huiden en metaal om hybride vormen te creëren die zowel menselijk als dierlijk lijken.

Ze laat zich sterk beïnvloeden door de tradities van de Vlaamse Renaissance. Geïnspireerd door de erfenis van de Europese oude meesters, christelijke iconografie, mythologie en culturele overlevering, weeft ze bestaande geschiedenis samen met nieuwe verhalen die verwijzen naar actuele gebeurtenissen. Zo creëert ze een psychologisch landschap van pathos, tederheid en onbehagen. Dualiteiten zoals liefde en lijden, gevaar en bescherming, leven en dood, en de menselijke drang naar begrip zijn terugkerende thema’s sinds het begin van haar carrière.

Berlinde De Bruyckere is a Belgian sculptor known internationally for her poignant sculptures and installations. Her work explores themes of physical vulnerability, suffering, transformation and the boundary between humans and animals. She uses materials such as wax, wood, textiles, animal skins and metal to create hybrid forms that appear both human and animal.

She is heavily influenced by the traditions of the Flemish Renaissance. Inspired by the legacy of European old masters, Christian iconography, mythology and cultural lore, she weaves together existing history with new narratives that reference current events. In this way, she creates a psychological landscape of pathos, tenderness and unease. Dualities such as love and suffering, danger and protection, life and death, and the human drive for understanding have been recurring themes since the beginning of her career.
